PETA tries to tie itself to the ‘Boro mosque:
Sheikh Ossama Bahloul
Imam
Islamic Center of Murfreesboro
Dear Imam Bahloul:
On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, including thousands in Tennessee, I have a proposal that may help you promote a message of peace to the Murfreesboro community-perhaps even reaching those responsible for the recent vandalism and arson at the future site of the new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. PETA would like your permission to place a sign at the construction site promoting compassion and understanding for all individuals. The artwork features images of peas arranged to represent different religious symbols, including the Christian cross, the Muslim star and crescent, the Hindu Aum, and the Jewish Star of David, and reads, “Give Peas a Chance: Go Vegan. Nonviolence Begins on Your Plate.”
The violence inflicted upon the billions of animals harmed, tormented, and slaughtered every year for food hinges upon a simple lack of empathy for others who may appear different and have different languages and customs-but who share with us an interest in enjoying life and living without pain and fear. In today’s industrialized meat and dairy industries, chickens, lambs, and turkeys have their throats cut while they’re still conscious, fish are left to suffocate on the decks of fishing boats or are cut open while they’re still alive, and calves are taken away from their mothers within hours of birth.
Human beings of all nationalities and religions often feel powerless in the face of all the discrimination and violence in the world, yet every time that we sit down to eat, we can help stop suffering by choosing a nonviolent meal. While opting for a veggie burger or falafel over a chicken kebab or steak sandwich won’t create instant global peace, it will reduce the sum total of suffering and make one think about what more is possible.
Placing PETA’s sign at the future site of the Islamic Center would be a simple way to promote peace, understanding, empathy, and compassion in the midst of the adversity you’ve recently faced. I look forward to discussing this opportunity. Thank you for your consideration.
Very truly yours,
Ingrid E. Newkirk
