Maybe a 2014 primary run isn’t completely out of the question

Zach Wamp takes a shot at Haslam:

At a Wednesday news conference called by Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield after a court ruling stopped an effort to recall Littlefield for a property tax increase, Wamp mentioned Haslam.

The Knoxville mayor early in his first term supported a property tax increase.

WTVC-TV reports that Wamp, in Haslam’s absence, said: “You know the mayor of Knoxville raised taxes by about the same amount and he’s going to be the governor of Tennessee.” Wamp then curtly walked away from the podium amid the group’s laughter.

Hospital stocks rally

Post Business - 3 hours 26 min ago

The broader market is having a so-so day but hospital stocks are posting nice gains, with CHS shares up about 5 percent and LifePoint adding more than 3 percent. There doesn’t appear to be a major news catalyst, although Fitch Ratings did include some mildly optimistic commentary about operators in its second-quarter health care industry overview.

Despite decreasing government reimbursement and the weak economy’s negative affects on patient utilization, profitability among the for-profit hospitals continues to be strong, supported by a low cost-inflation environment, cost-cutting and -containment efforts, and continued strong commercial insurer reimbursement trends.

There’s a parallel I hadn’t thought of

PETA tries to tie itself to the ‘Boro mosque:

Sheikh Ossama Bahloul
Imam
Islamic Center of Murfreesboro

Dear Imam Bahloul:

On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and our more than 2 million members and supporters worldwide, including thousands in Tennessee, I have a proposal that may help you promote a message of peace to the Murfreesboro community-perhaps even reaching those responsible for the recent vandalism and arson at the future site of the new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. PETA would like your permission to place a sign at the construction site promoting compassion and understanding for all individuals. The artwork features images of peas arranged to represent different religious symbols, including the Christian cross, the Muslim star and crescent, the Hindu Aum, and the Jewish Star of David, and reads, “Give Peas a Chance: Go Vegan. Nonviolence Begins on Your Plate.”

The violence inflicted upon the billions of animals harmed, tormented, and slaughtered every year for food hinges upon a simple lack of empathy for others who may appear different and have different languages and customs-but who share with us an interest in enjoying life and living without pain and fear. In today’s industrialized meat and dairy industries, chickens, lambs, and turkeys have their throats cut while they’re still conscious, fish are left to suffocate on the decks of fishing boats or are cut open while they’re still alive, and calves are taken away from their mothers within hours of birth.

Human beings of all nationalities and religions often feel powerless in the face of all the discrimination and violence in the world, yet every time that we sit down to eat, we can help stop suffering by choosing a nonviolent meal. While opting for a veggie burger or falafel over a chicken kebab or steak sandwich won’t create instant global peace, it will reduce the sum total of suffering and make one think about what more is possible.

Placing PETA’s sign at the future site of the Islamic Center would be a simple way to promote peace, understanding, empathy, and compassion in the midst of the adversity you’ve recently faced. I look forward to discussing this opportunity. Thank you for your consideration.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

President

Big Orange squeeze

Post Politics - 3 hours 56 min ago

The TNGOP comes after Mike Turner in the parking pass debacle:

“Rep. Turner continues to assert that he had no knowledge of this incident, but I find it hard to believe that his staffer would just come up with this idea out of nowhere,” said Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney. “If Rep. Turner didn’t know what was happening, why did his staffer attribute the asking price to his boss? Rep. Turner’s story doesn’t add up and he needs to be straight about his role in this scheme to gain profit from the very taxpayers that already pay his salary and quit throwing his staffer under the bus.”
